MIM
president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday feared that major riots would rock the
country as what happened in “1984 and 2002“.
Owaisi was referring to the anti-Sikh riots which shook
the country in 1984 and the 2002 postGodhra riots which claimed hundreds of
lives, most of them Muslim, in Gujarat, at a time when current Prime Minister
served as state's CM. What has happened in'84 and 2002 can happen again because
of pressure from the media and NGOs.
He was speaking at the launch of the Dilli 1984 Nundi
Gujarat 2002 Varaku: Vyavasthala Vaiphalyam pao Panchnama at La Makaan.
Emphasizing that the police must be independent of the executive, Owaisi said
that no amount of media pressure or criticism from non-governmental
organisations could prevent such incidents from happening.
“But believe me this can happen again. Unless the police
force is detached from the executive and is made independent and accountable,
believe me it is going to happen again. It takes a small incident to fire up a
whole issue and it is very unfortunate,“ he said.
